Imagine looking for a pen and when you reach into the very back of your desk drawer, instead of a pen you find a key. You pull it out from under the notepads and rubber bands and examine it under the lamp. You recognize that this is the key that unlocks the very thing you’ve been searching for your whole life. Even if you don’t know what you’re missing, once you unlock it with this incredible key, you will know, and you will have it.
That’s how I feel about understanding night dreams.
My dreams have helped me make big decisions by confirming what I already knew. My dreams have shown me when it’s time to change a situation instead of moaning about it, or to be patient in it. At other times a dream has shown me a peaceful way to understanding a hurtful event in my past.
Do you ever wake up feeling a sense of wonder from a dream, or puzzlement at strange images you saw in the night? Have you ever felt intense longing when you wake from a dream? Isn’t it intriguing how powerfully they can effect our feelings? We are naturally curious beings and God loves to leverage our innate curiosity to draw us into intimacy with Him! He has often used my dreams to help me understand how very much He loves me.
How do you know if a dream was a result of indigestion? Was it just the physical brain processing the day? Or something more? You can learn to recognize the difference. I’ve noticed that meaningful dreams stay in my mind longer, the scenes push their way into my thoughts at random times. Or weeks later, an event may bring a dream back up to the surface when it becomes relevant. And then suddenly, it all comes together.
At other times, I wake up totally intrigued by the happenings of the night and I’m drawn to write it down and figure it out. God led me to develop my own method to explore dreams, plus I’ve studied methods others use, too. But often, before I’m halfway through the interpretation process, the whole message just falls in my lap. It’s a wonderful gift to suddenly understand a beautiful message of encouragement, a personal message of love from the Eternal One who knows you best and knows what matters most to you. Unfolding the meaning of a dream can also be a beautiful way for God to release into your heart what matters most to Him, and here’s a clue; what matters most to him is being in love with YOU.
There’s nothing to fear in dreams, whether they seem scary or humiliating or delightful; the same Author uses them to reach into your heart to remove fears, heal humiliations, and delight you with a sense of joyful purpose. It’s like a walk through a lush garden. You can explore in solitude or companionship, but companionship is more rewarding. So, join me. Let’s take a dream journey together, with God.
